The transition into a sport or activity related career is a stage of development. The acquisition of key components of mentorship are vital to the success of the individual who undertakes this stage. There is also a stage in the life of an experienced coach in which they are more effective in mentoring coaches than athletes.

The 7 Stages of Physical Development:
 

Stage One: The Toddler Stage - (ages 18 months - 3 years)
Stage Two: The Basics Stage - (ages 4 - 9 years of age)
Stage Three: The Initiation Stage - (ages 9-12)
Stage Four: The Developmental Stage - (ages 12-15) - puberty
Stage Five: The Specialization Stage - (ages 15 - 18)
Stage Six: The Elite Stage - (ages 18 +)
