The Initiation Stage - (normally ages 9-12)
Objective: Become proficient
(level 4) in all 12 of the movement skills that comprise the YC Movement
Skills for Life Program. Begin acquisition of higher level sport skills
and move towards a proficient level of development. Increase the amount
of time dedicated toward building ability (coordination, strength, speed,
agility).
A multi-skill approach is used to further the development and proficiency
of the basic movement skills along with the incorporation of more specific
sport skills. Research would indicate that neglect of the first 3 stages
of development will be detrimental to a child's participation and engagement
in physical activity and sport.
The ages of this stage, 9 - 11 or 12, are great developmental opportunities
for the child prior to entering puberty. This window of opportunity
can be lost if the 12 basic skills are not developed properly. This
can lead to a compromise of ability in the life of the child to reach
their physical potential.
This stage of development is marked by the beginning of a more disciplined
and grouped form of training in comparison to the earlier stages. The
fun and games approach are never lost however. Maturity dictates this
as the child prepares to enter puberty.
